Figeac is a small medieval town in the Lot region of France situated on the north bank of the river Célé, a tributary of the river Lot. The old part of the town is a delightful maze of narrow roads and steep alleys some so dark and unspoilt it would be no surprise in the evening light to see a fifteenth century scholar in a fustian cape with a bundle of papers under one arm coming downhill towards the central square. Thus one is drawn to photograph the old and the picturesque. Yet the town is inevitably littered with the emblems of modernity. This set of images has been put into pairs in order to tempt the viewer into finding narratives or connections that of course did not exist at the moment the photographs were taken.
